Snyder County, Pennsylvania – May 6, 2011
Judy Mays, a long time high school teacher much beloved by her students comes forward to discuss her feelings, thoughts and actions with regard to the April 26th expose by WNEP-TV Newswatch 16 about her side job as a romance writer. The report aired on television and was then put online for discussion (http://www.wnep.com/wnep-sny-parents-buranich-english-teacher-writes-racy-novels-20110426,0,4057307.story) where hundreds of authors, readers, students, parents and concerned citizens offered their opinion on whether or not the teacher had done anything wrong by writing racy romance novels on her own time.
When Mays was asked about whether the reporter contacted her for comment she shared that, “I got an email at about 2 – 2:30 in the afternoon on my school email and that was the first I knew anything about it. Next thing I know I’m on the 5 o’clock news!” Mays didn’t reply to the email at the time because she was working. She found out she was on the news when her mother called her to tell her to turn on the television.
Mays has a good outlook on the entire ordeal. Even with one parent remarking, "She is teaching children that are under the age of 18 and definitely the books that she is writing are adult books.” Mays realized right away that the publicity, which included pictures of her book covers displayed on television, could help her career. And the support she’s getting over the ordeal has been astounding. Within days of someone establishing a support page on Facebook more than 9000 people had joined in support of the teacher/author.
An exclusive interview with the teacher/author where she discusses the details of the day the news segment came out, what happened afterward and what she plans on doing about it was given to Reader’s Entertainment (http://readersentertainment.com) and will air on Reader’s Entertainment Radio at 6PM Eastern Time Friday May 6th at www.blogtalkradio.com/circle-of-seven.
